Hendrik and Bets Vermooten, Mozambique
They write "Over the last five years we have seen much suffering among missionaries. We have seen small children get incurable heart diseases, and other children, including our own, very ill with malaria where no worthwhile medical help is close at hand. We have been held at gunpoint by criminals, soldiers and a drunk policeman. Last year, missionaries living near to us had to hide their children in a closet because bullets were hitting their house during a tribal war. Most missionaries have children going to far-away boarding schools. Few things can compare with the pain of saying goodbye to children leaving after a short holiday; it feels like a dagger in the heart being turned and turned. Except you don't die. "Yet the suffering of missionaries is nothing in comparison with the suffering of the local people. We can buy enough food. When there is a water shortage, we can go and fetch water with our car. Poverty for them means not eating for days at a time. They see their children wane with hunger. Missionaries see this happening to the people they love, yet often stand by watching, helpless. How can but a handful of people help thousands? Missions has been called 'a grieving profession.'" Articles - most recent first: |
