Humanitarian & Disaster Relief Breaking the cycle of poverty "He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord and He will reward him for what he has done." Proverbs 19:17 During our early beginnings 75 years ago, humanitarian aid was one of World Outreach's main arms of service, in particular to the teeming multitudes who were fleeing Communism as it spread its evil tentacles through Europe. Mercy ministries remain a significant part of World Outreach to this day. Our personnel are committed to not just feeding, clothing, caring and educating the poor, destitute and underprivileged, we believe we must also help break the cycle of poverty, as well as introduce them to Jesus Christ. As one missionary stated "Even if we came to Africa with a different ministry focus, we can't ignore the plight of humanity we see, often just outside our front door." Africa South Africa and other African nations struggle with urban drift as families flee rural poverty, resulting in massive slums. The response of World Outreach and its partners has been to develop a low cost housing system empowering communities to build quality houses for themselves. This, combined with water well drilling, farm and development and training programmes, is a recipe for powerful community transformation. In northern Mozambique, at our Maziotela base, a milk-feeding programme and a medical care clinic is in operation that literally saves lives every week, while in Zimbabwe and Malawi exciting projects are also being developed. South East Asia In Indonesia's West Kalimantan province (formerly Borneo), World Outreach teams have a strong involvement ministering to the Dayak tribal people group who have 400 different dialects among them. One major stronghold against the poor village children is that they are strongly influenced by the local witch doctors who instill great fear in their little lives and force them into the most grotesque idol worship and traditions.
Ezra is one of these children who, when rescued, was deadly sick with tuberculosis, severely malnourished and left to fend for himself. On the orders of the local witch doctor, six-year-old Sisi's grandmother fed her rice wine each day to keep the evil spirits away. Sisi was turning into a potential alcoholic with dreadful behaviour problems. Her father pleaded with the Living Waters team to take her away so that her life would be spared. When Mandis was found, he was a very sick little boy with imminent kidney failure. According to the doctors, he would die if he went back to his village because he needed a very special diet and medical treatment, instead of the witch doctor's deadly potions. All three children, and hundreds more, are in the care of World Outreach teams. Most have experienced God's wonderful Grace through a miraculous transformation in their lives. Our dedicated teams provide them with a safe and loving home, life's essentials and an opportunity to reach their full potential in God. Capacity building In South East Asia and the Indian subcontinent, different World Outreach mercy ministries have building plans already drawn up to increase their respective accommodation capacities. This will allow more destitute and underprivileged children to be cared for, given a hope and a future, and eventually become a dedicated disciple of Jesus Christ. Every destitute or exploited child deserves not only to know real love, care and protection, but also to reach their full potential in God. Their futures depend on it. World Outreach believes that 2007 and the coming years will be times of growth and tremendous outpouring of God's favour as we continue to demonstrate the love of God to the underprivileged.
