The Besfords in Mozambique July, 2007 From Steve and Rebekah Besford World Outreach Missionaries to Mozambique Dear Friends and Family,
It’s been a real encouragement to see you, and for those of you we haven’t yet managed to see, we are around until 21st September so have plenty of time to make a plan! Sadly, St Peter’s Church has decided that they are not able to continue as our sending church. However, we continue to enjoy good relationships with individuals from the church and Steve will be helping out with their annual children’s holiday club at the end of July. Our last couple of months at Maforga were just as busy. Rebekah was kept on her toes juggling the clinic and outside baby programme. She started a weekly group for those babies who were seriously malnourished and was then able to hand it over to a new team member who is a trained dietician. We are using the leaves of the moringa tree as a nutritional supplement and, when we return, hope to develop further the use of medicinal plants in the clinic. Unfortunately, for the time we are at home the clinic has had to close for the first time in 21 years. Our aim is to get the clinic to a point where it is not reliant on a western nurse being present. When we return to Mozambique we will be working with the Department of Health to identify and employ a suitable local nurse. At the beginning of March, one-day-old twins, Fred and Tarisai were referred to the orphanage from Social Services. Their mother had died during childbirth and the father had no female relatives to take care of them. The twins are doing really well and bring lots of joy to those around them.
Our daughter Nyasha holding one of the twin babies Steve has put in place a simple accounting system for the medical work at Maforga. He was also able to support the wider team in giving computer and Portuguese lessons to various individuals.
The church building at Nhambia Once a week he visits a local church at Nhambia to lead a small Bible study. He is also involved in taking a group of the young people from Maforga to the prison on Sunday afternoons. These are great opportunities to keep in touch with the local people when normally he is stuck behind a computer screen!
The bible study group Easter Sunday started with the baptism of one of the boys from the orphanage and a couple of western visitors. Maforga is located in such beauty and going down to the waterfall early that morning to witness this event was very special.
The baptism of one of the boys at the waterfall of Maforga Christian Mission Nyasha has adapted well to life at Maforga and enjoys the freedom, company of other children and the farm animals. Every day we have to go and watch the sheep and cows coming in from the fields. She especially enjoys cuddling new born lambs!
Nyasha with Farai, Callum and a baby lamb Our big news is the arrival of Ruth Alisha on 2nd July. Nyasha takes her role as big sister seriously and is very protective over Ruth.
Nyasha with her new baby sister, Ruth We are looking forward to some time “off” over the next few weeks to bond as a family before we return to Mozambique. God Bless. "And what does the Lord require of you?
