The Besfords in Mozambique

December, 2006

From Steve and Rebekah Besford

World Outreach Missionaries to Mozambique

Dear Friends and Family,

Rebekah and Nyash at ChristmasWe hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. For us it was a special time with Rebekah’s sister and her boyfriend visiting from England. They also brought lots of gifts with them - mainly for Nyasha!

The last few months we have been as busy as we can be with the stifling temperatures. We have been overseeing the responsibilities of Kotie and Rina while they have been home in South Africa.

Our main task has been that of overseeing the building of a house for the future leader of the Church at Naherenque.

Rebekah has also been running a feeding programme for malnourished children in the village and giving nutrition education lessons to their mothers.

Steve continues to teach a group of new Christians from a non-Christian background for 3 afternoons a week. The course is going well, and the people are really enjoying listening to the Bible stories and seeing how it all fits together.

It’s the school summer holidays, so we have been running the youth group in the afternoons, and the young people have been enjoying the beach. We also had a Christmas party for them which involved lots of food and singing.

As you are aware we were requested to take 6 months to confirm if Nacala is where we are meant to be. It has been a tough time, during which we have felt a bit in limbo, but we feel we have made the most of every opportunity. We have come to realise that this area is still in a pioneering stage in terms of establishing Christian work and our skills of nursing and administration are not currently being utilized to their potential.

At the beginning of December we drove the 2 days to Maforga Christian Mission, where we were working in between 2001 and 2003 and where we met, to talk with the leaders, Roy & Trish Perkins.

Maforga has been established for over 20 years and has lots going on. At present their general clinic is closed because they haven’t a nurse and there is a lot of administration work that Steve could help them with. So after consultation with World Outreach it has been agreed that we should return to Maforga.

We want to maintain our connections with the north and we hope that in the future we will be able to bring small teams of Mozambicans to encourage the local church in and around Nacala.

We are committed to being in Nacala until the end of January when Kotie and Rina return. After that we will be joining the team at Maforga - and we are very excited about that - and later in 2007 we return to England for a few weeks to meet with our main supporting church.

Lots of love,
Steve, Rebekah and Nyasha

"And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with
your God." Micah 6v8
